Participation: A Close Look at Its Dynamics
Dean Tjosvold
Simon Fraser University
Managers and researchers have appeared to reach opposing conclusions about participation. Not fully appreciated is that the outcomes of participation depend upon how organizational members actually interact as they make decisions. Research on interaction indicates both the potential and limitations of participation. Cooperative goals and productive controversy contribute to participation. Future research can investigate interaction processes and validate procedures managers can use to make participation successful.
