The Disintegration of an Organization: A Dialectical Analysis

A. J. Grimes

J. R. Cornwall

University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh

Innisfree, an alternative free school (K-8), existed for about 4 years. Ideographic methodology and dialectical analysis indicates the values and ideology of Innisfree members and the collectivist structure of the school led to ideological and structural contradictions. Ideology constrained structural and process changes that contributed to the school's disintegration. Organization leaders and members were unaware of the contradictions and hence they could not be overcome.
